An American political scientist studying informal trade in Nigeria, Shelby Grossman has accused the Lagos state government of rendering 4,700 Nigerians homeless in other to support the private business interests of a popular royal family in Lagos. Photo: Shelby's Twitter page In a series of tweets on Sunday, March 19, Grossman who interacted with some members of the displaced waterfront community - Otodo-Gbame, said the government partially demolished structures in the community on Friday, March 17 in violation of a court injunction. Aljazeera had reported that the demolition was carried out by Nigerian security forces who employed the use of gunfire and tear gas to make way for demolitions. According to Grossman, the Elegushi family, a traditional family from Lekki area, is probably behind the demolition. ''They want to use the land for upscale development,'' she added. Subsequent tweets by Grossman indicates that the community dwellers are defiant and have started rebuilding their structures. However, on Monday, March 20, Grossman received a text message from one of the community dwellers indicating that the security agencies have unfinished business in the area. Meanwhile, Nigerians have been reacting to the demolition, with many describing the action of the Lagos state governor as cruel and unacceptable. The Lagos state government is yet to officially react to the issue.
